HOWES CAVE, N.Y. -- Howe Caverns’ General Manager Robert Holt was elected secretary/treasurer of the National Caves Association (NCA) at the organization’s recent convention at Luray Caverns in Luray, VA.
The NCA is comprised of more than 80 member caves from throughout the United States.
Mr. Holt serves on the NCA’s Executive Committee and is chairman of its Insurance Committee. He also is the director of the association’s Region One. In this position, Mr. Holt is responsible for member caves in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Mr. Holt has been associated with Howe Caverns for almost 40 years. He also serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Cave House Museum of Mining & Geology in Howes Cave -- adjacent to the original entrance to Howe Caverns
Mr. Holt is the fourth general manager of Howe Caverns to serve on the NCA Board.
He also has been a member of the Board of Directors of the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association since 1988, serving as chairman in 1997 and 1998.
A local historian, Mr. Holt published Lester Howe & Howe Caverns -- “The Hole Story,” in celebration of the Caverns’ 80th anniversary in 2009. He has written two other books, “O Zion, Haste, Your Mission High Fulfilling on the occasion of the 1993 Bicentennial of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cobleskill. In 1997, he wrote, The History of the Town of Cobleskill, 1797-1997, which celebrated the Bicentennial of the community in which he resides.
ABOUT HOWE CAVERNS
Howe Caverns is the largest cave open to the public in the Northeast and located midway between Albany and Cooperstown, off Exit 22 of I-88. Open daily, except Thanksgiving and Christmas days when it is closed, Howe Caverns’ winter hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November 1 through March 31. Summer hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 pm from April 1 through October.
